Name Description |
The Talent Irrigation District (TID) was established in 1916 in response to the increasing water needs of the Rogue Valley pear industry. $600,000 in bonds were approved to deliver water to about 9,100 acres. While the first documented irrigation water right was to Jacob Wagner in 1852, the first TID canal was the McDonald Canal, delivering water from McDonald Creek, a tributary of the Applegate River, to Bear Creek. Hyatt Prairie Reservoir, the Talent Lateral, the East Lateral, the Ashland Lateral, and the first Emigrant Dam were all largely completed by 1924. Emigrant Creek, Hill Creek, and the Billings Siphon were completed by 1927. The larger Rogue River Basin project was conceived in the 1930s and built out through the 1960s with the construction of Howard Prairie Dam and reservoir, Keene Creek Reservoir, new collection canals, diversion dams, drainage works, and enlarged siphons. The Green Springs Power Plant and the enlarged Emigrant Dam were completed by 1960 and the Keene Creek Canal, Sampson Creek Diversion Dam and Emigrant Creek Siphon on the Ashland Lateral were abandoned. Flood control, fish habitat, recreational use, and water quality were all matters of concern and effort 1960-2000. Water conservation became a more pressing issue in the early 2000s. More than 17,890 acres are covered by the Talent Irrigation District. |
